Sandy is always challenging us to learn new things. We now know what shingles look like.

On my flight to Denver, The 19 year old next to me asked if it was my first time flying. "No", i said smiling "is it yours? " we talked through take off to ease her fears but mostly she just laughed at how strange it felt. Then i got to help her find her connection. She also had two owls tattooed on her feet, She likes giraffes and dream catchers.

Went to a dentist I know and trust this morning then re-met my
Lincoln ccd best friend at an event this evening. For those
that know both names Christine Short is Chrissy Roche.

The city is installing a stop light on Beaver Grade Road. Daniela saw the construction filling in the median and cried, "Oh, no! I loved that piece of land!"

They used to plant flowers there.

That's what I'm getting. It's an interesting read.

I'm going to disagree. The book is a satirical attack against sexism. The narrator comes from a fictional sexist society that is very restricted in its view of the world. The descriptions of the sexist society are not intended to support sexism, but rather, mock it. The extra-dimensional being's society holds views that are very different.

quoth the sphere:
It is not for me to classify human faculties according to merit. Yet many of the best and wisest in Spaceland think more of the affections than of the understanding, more of your despised Straight Lines [females] than of your belauded Circles [highest ranked males].

Also, it's extremely sexist and somehow racist even for a math book.

Yes from what I recall from Dad, the women and men of flatland were different shapes, and at some point a sphere passes through their world and confuses them all, because it only appears to them as a circle that grows bigger, then smaller, then disappears again.

Anyhow it's public domain

I remember dad talking about a book called "Flatland".

Has anyone heard of this book "Flatland: a romance of many dimensions" by Edwin Abbott? I thought a few mathematicians in the family might enjoy it.

Saw a fantastic movie with AO tonight. "Finding Vivian
Maiers" is about finding over 100,000 negatives taken by this
lady and the search for information about her (she worked as
a nanny) and also showing some of the pictures -- taken in
New York City, Chicago, and France. A lot of the pictures
had never been developed before. I especially liked the
black and white pictures from the 50s. You can seem some of
her pictures at http://www.vivianmaier.com/

here's your natural disaster coming at you from the south. Fight!

solar storm a'brewin
9/12/14 4:19 PM
As of midday on Friday, the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center indicated that level 2, or moderate, geomagnetic storming was underway. Moderate storming means that high-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms and if the storm lasts for a long period of time, transformer damage may be possible. At this level of intensity, auroras may be visible as far south as Idaho and New York.

The strongest part of the storm may be yet to come, though. The weather service says that it may reach a level 3 storm Saturday, which might cause problems with satellite or low-frequency radio navigation systems.

And I was happy just to wake up and not hear rain -- from comments on Facebook, we've had 7 inches in the last two days. Hearing it running down the gutters was getting annoying. It still is dreary and overcast today, but at least no rain.

Good morning!
